Low pressure will dominate the weather for Cowes Week 2019. A very active low is sweeping north eastwards across the country. Once out in the North Sea on Sunday the Solent will be left in a south westerly gradient flow Sunday, Monday & Tuesday. The next Atlantic low is forecast to move into Ireland once again by Wednesday continuing the west to south westerly flow over the race areas throughout the week.

Early cloud and squally showers clearing to leave a bright and sunny but very windy day. Average wind speeds of at least 25 – 30 knots, often 30 – 35 knots and gusting in excess of 40 knots expected. Wind speeds due to decrease only slowly this evening & overnight. Air temperatures reaching 20°C and feeling warm when out of the wind & in this afternoon’s sunshine.

A blustery south westerly wind with plenty of sunshine and a low risk of squally showers. The south westerly gradient is forecast to decrease only slowly on Saturday evening and wind speeds from daylight on Sunday are likely be above 20 knots, 18 – 25 knot range. A slowly decreasing trend is expected but that may not be noticeable in the sailing wind until evening.  Any showers will be visible on the radar tomorrow morning ahead of race period.

Outlook

Low pressure in control all week with a west to south westerly flow. There will be plenty of sunshine in between scattered showers and only a few bands of rain around fronts, mainly Wednesday.

Tuesday W – WSW 10 – 18 knots Scattered showers, bright
Wednesday SW 16 – 24 knots Next low & fronts bringing rain
Thursday & Friday W – SW 12 – 18 knots Dry & bright
